Cochlear wish comes true for Cape Town boy
CAPE TOWN – A dream come true can often be accompanied by unanticipated challenges.
This was the case for little Gamiem Ahjum’s mother Rashieda, as she nervously watched the minutes tick by while waiting in Tygerberg Hospital.
In theatre her son, at a mere two years and seven months, was receiving a life-altering operation that would enable him to become part of the hearing world.
But months earlier the cochlear implant seemed like a distant possibility, far out of financial reach for the Elsies River family until their Kfm Christmas Wish came true.
The Bidvest Hear for Life Trust heard Gamiem’s story and undertook to cover the entire cost of the cochlear device, to the value of R270,000.
With the additional assistance of the cochlear implant team at Tygerberg Hospital and the Audiology Department, Gamiem was on the road to a radically transformed life just in time for his third birthday – the recommended age for intervention in order for deaf children to develop good speech and learning skills.
